Writer and director Aaron Sorkin opens his new feature film, The Social Reckoning, in theaters on October 9. According to GoldDerby and Variety, the movie serves as a follow-up companion to his 2010 film The Social Network. The story focuses on Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, who worked with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White, to reveal how the platform manipulated its algorithms. [2][4]

Critical reactions to the project have been divided. GoldDerby reported that critics are mixed on the film, with opinions ranging from describing it as sharp and blistering entertainment to calling it a shallow and one-note release. Slate Culture reported that the narrative heavily highlights an internal 2016 report showing that 64 percent of users in extremist Facebook groups were directed there by the site's own algorithm. [1][2]

Sorkin wrote and directed the new film solo without his previous collaborator, director David Fincher. In the original 2010 biographical drama The Social Network, Sorkin wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay detailing the founding of Facebook, which starred Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg. [2][4][12][13]

Variety reported that actor Jeremy Strong also appears in the project as Zuckerberg. While Sorkin currently has no set plans to make a third movie, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the filmmaker is open to completing a trilogy if inspiration strikes. [4][7]
