Lawyers representing Nick Reiner and the trustee of a trust fund have reached an agreement to allow a mediator to decide if funds can be released to pay for his legal defense. The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline both reported on Friday that the agreement was reached during a probate hearing before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ruben Garcia. Reiner faces life in prison if convicted of the 2025 killing of his parents. [1][2]
According to Deadline, the dispute involves a $1.5 million fund. The Hollywood Reporter reported that lawyers for the trust have argued Reiner cannot access the funds due to a slayer statute, which prevents individuals from receiving an inheritance from anyone they kill. [1][2]
His lawyer, Anita Wu, stated that a criminal defendant has a constitutional right to use personal funds to hire their chosen attorney, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The mediation agreement could allow Reiner to rehire defense attorney Alan Jackson. Jackson previously withdrew from the case due to Reiner's financial limitations after representing clients such as Harvey Weinstein and Karen Read. [1]
Reiner is the son of Robert Reiner, the American filmmaker and actor who directed acclaimed studio films across comedy, drama, and documentary formats. The elder Reiner received three Primetime Emmy Awards and was nominated for an Academy Award during his career. [6]
