Netflix begins reporting theater box office numbers for La Bola Negra

Netflix is reporting theatrical box office figures for the first time for its film La Bola Negra, according to IndieWire. The streaming service is opening the awards contender in a limited release on four screens, marking a shift from its traditional strategy of hiding theatrical revenues. [1]

IndieWire reported that Netflix has historically put select titles into theaters only to secure awards qualification or to satisfy high-profile directors such as Guillermo del Toro and Martin Scorsese. The outlet noted that the distributor has previously avoided publicizing box office receipts, even when running successful theatrical showings. [1]

Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the queer epic film stars Guitarricadelafuente and Miguel Bernardeau. The feature launched its global tour at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, Variety reported. [3][11]

The project is gaining early traction in the current awards circuit. GoldDerby reported that the track La Nieve by Guitarricadelafuente and Raül Refree holds the top spot in its Best Original Song predictions, while Deadline AwardsLine reported that the film is among 68 titles shortlisted for the 39th European Film Awards.
