Comedian and actor Russell Brand took the stand on Wednesday at Southwark Crown Court in London to testify in his ongoing sexual assault trial. Brand denied all accusations against him, maintaining that his sexual encounters were entirely consensual. Rolling Stone Culture, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety TV, BBC News, and Deadline TV all reported that Brand took the stand as the defense presented its case. [1][2][3][4][6]
During his testimony, Brand stated that sexual consent is fundamental and described the allegations as deeply traumatic. He also revealed that no one agreed to testify on his behalf, leaving him as the sole defense witness. The Hollywood Reporter, Variety TV, BBC News, and Deadline TV reported that defense lawyer Ian Winter KC called Brand as the first witness after the prosecution finished presenting its evidence. [1][2][3][4][6]
BBC News reported that Brand faces seven charges, including three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault. The allegations come from six female complainants and span a 10 year period from 1999 to 2009. BBC News also reported that Brand previously made statements to the police between 2023 and 2025 denying all non-consensual sexual contact. [4][5]
During questioning by the prosecution, lawyers rejected Brand's claim that he was abandoned, pointing out that he retains a platform with millions of followers, Deadline reported. Brand initially rose to prominence as a stand-up comedian and television presenter in the United Kingdom, where he hosted Big Brother's Big Mouth, before starring in feature films such as St. Trinian's and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
