Digital journalism publication Salon is shutting down nearly 31 years after its launch, Deadline and The New York Times reported. The site announced on Thursday in a farewell post that it would go dark later the same day. The company stated that its publishing model was no longer sustainable. [1][2]

Salon was established in the wake of a strike at the San Francisco Examiner. Newspaper editor David Talbot founded the outlet after exploring the publishing potential of the internet. Talbot was joined in founding the site by Gary Kamiya, Andrew Ross, Mignon Khargie, Scott Rosenberg, and Laura Miller, according to Deadline. [1]

The platform was later acquired by businessman and entrepreneur Chris Richmond. Richmond, who also founded the television streaming site ShareTV.com and co-founded the adtech platform Proper Media, acquired Salon.com alongside other websites including Snopes and TV Tropes. [3]
