Google, Meta, and TikTok have sued the state of California over a recently passed law designed to restrict social media platforms from offering features deemed addictive to children under 16. Deadline, Reuters, The Guardian, AOL, and The New York Times all reported that the lawsuit was filed to block the new regulations. [1][3][5][6][7]

In its legal filing on Wednesday, Google argued that the California legislation would prohibit core functions such as YouTube recommendation systems and autoplay features. Deadline reported that Google compared its autoplay mechanism to traditional television broadcasting, where the next program begins as soon as the current one ends. Google also claimed in the filing that the state law violates the First Amendment and is preempted by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. [1]

The legal action comes amid a broader global trend of digital regulation. Since 2023, numerous countries and subdivisions have introduced or passed laws requiring age verification for social networks and digital services to protect young people from harmful content. TikTok operates as a short-form video platform hosting user-submitted content ranging from three seconds to 60 minutes. [8][9]
