Netflix has deployed artificial intelligence in various capacities on roughly 300 titles, according to statements made by executives at the Busan International Film Festival. The Hollywood Reporter Business and Variety both reported that Netflix senior director of Asia-Pacific production Sung Q Lee, referred to as Lee Sung-gyun by Variety, revealed the figure during an industry panel on film production and artificial intelligence. [1][2]
The executive stressed that preserving human creativity remains essential despite the technological deployment across the filmmaking process. Speaking on the same panel, director Kang Yoon-sung of The Outlaws stated that artificial intelligence workflows could reduce production budgets for feature films by 30% to 40%. The Hollywood Reporter Business and Variety noted that Kimball Thurston, chief technology officer at Weta FX, also participated in the discussion. [1][2]
In a separate festival session, global head of GenFX at Netflix in-house studio Eyeline James Rustad explained how generative technology impacts visual effects workflows, according to Variety. Rustad stated that while generative artificial intelligence expands creative choices for visual effects shots, human artists must still evaluate and select the options that best serve the narrative. [3]
The panel occurred during the Creative Asia event, which Netflix co-hosted alongside the 31st Busan International Film Festival, Variety reported. During the event, Lee also cited internal research showing that 67% of surveyed international members expressed interest in visiting South Korea due to interest in stories set in the country. [4]
