Filmmaker Taika Waititi has publicly defended his latest movie, Klara and the Sun, following poor critical reviews and weak box office performance. Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, and Variety reported that Waititi posted a message on social media on Saturday targeting critics who gave the film negative reviews. [1][2][3]

In his post, Waititi highlighted the contrast between the movie's ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, showing an audience score of 78 percent alongside low critical score figures. Deadline reported the critics score was at 26 percent, while The Hollywood Reporter and Variety reported the score as 28 percent. Deadline noted that the audience score later dropped to 73 percent. Waititi wrote that he has not read a review in almost 15 years, adding that he listens to the public instead. [1][2][3]

The film is set in a dystopian future and stars Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams, as The Hollywood Reporter noted. The story is an adaptation of the 2021 dystopian science fiction novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, which centers on a solar-powered artificial friend named Klara who is chosen as a companion for a sickly child. As FTMQ Entertainment reported earlier, the film adaptation premiered recently in New York City. [2][9][10]

Waititi is an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, and Grammy Award winning director from New Zealand who previously directed Jojo Rabbit. Variety reported that the critics score for Klara and the Sun marks the lowest score of Waititi's career to date. [3][7]
