Blackpool, Milton Keynes, Sheffield, and Wrexham have been shortlisted to become the UK City of Culture in 2029, the BBC reported. The designation is awarded to a different location every four years. The chosen winner will follow previous titleholders Derry-Londonderry, Hull, Coventry, and Bradford. [1]

According to the BBC, each shortlisted candidate will receive at least 125,000 pounds from the government to develop its bid further. The final winner will be awarded 10 million pounds to organize a year of cultural events and activities centered on its local history and strengths. [1]

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy stated that the shortlisted candidates demonstrated strong local pride in their submissions, the BBC reported. Sheffield is a city located in South Yorkshire, while Milton Keynes is situated in Buckinghamshire and features an extensive parkland system. [1][8][9]

The winning location will be announced in 2027 to become the fifth UK City of Culture, the BBC reported. Although the BBC noted in one instance that the announcement will occur in May, it confirmed the final winner will be declared in early 2027. [1]
