HBO has officially greenlit an hour-long drama series based on the Crazy Rich Asians franchise, according to reports from GoldDerby, IndieWire, and TVLine. The show serves as a direct sequel to the 2018 film, picking up immediately after the events of the movie. The project is adapted from the bestselling book series written by Kevin Kwan. [1][2][3][4]
Original cast members Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng are set to return as series regulars, as reported by GoldDerby, IndieWire, and TVLine. Reports differ slightly regarding Michelle Yeoh, with GoldDerby and IndieWire listing her as a series regular while TVLine reports that she will have a recurring role. TVLine also notes that the series order consists of eight episodes. [2][3][4]
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film script, serves as the showrunner and executive producer for the series, according to IndieWire. Film director Jon M. Chu confirmed the reunion of the creative team and cast, calling the opportunity to bring everyone back together a homecoming after eight years. [2][3][6]
The original 2018 romantic comedy drama film followed Chinese American professor Rachel as she traveled to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick, discovering his family was among the wealthiest in the country. Produced by Warner Bros. on a reported $30 million budget, the film grossed over $239 million globally. [9][11]
The project marks the first series order for HBO following the completed merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery under the Skydance era, according to reports from IndieWire and Hollywood Reporter TV. [3][7]
