Steven E. de Souza, who wrote and directed the 1994 film Street Fighter, has defended the project as being intentionally funny, according to The Hollywood Reporter. De Souza addressed social media reactions that arose after the franchise returned to cinemas with a new feature film. He expressed pride that the Capcom video game property is still active in cinema. The 1994 Street Fighter feature was the first big-screen adaptation of the Capcom video game and starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, and Ming-Na Wen, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The franchise later saw a 2009 release titled Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, which underperformed at the box office. [1]

The comments follow the theatrical arrival of Paramount and Legendary's new Street Fighter movie, which opened at the top of the box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter. As FTMQ Entertainment reported earlier, the new film was directed by comedy veteran Kitao Sakurai and took in more than 30 million dollars domestically during its opening weekend. [1][5][6]

The recent theatrical release stars Andrew Koji as Ryu and Noah Centineo as Ken, as FTMQ Entertainment reported earlier. Sakurai previously stated that concrete plans for a film sequel have not yet been written down. [5]
