film veteran Takeo Hisamatsu has returned as director of the Tokyo International Film Festival ahead of its 40th anniversary, The Hollywood Reporter reported. Hisamatsu previously led the event from 2017 to 2021 following executive roles at Shochiku and Warner Bros. He said the return was unexpected but offered an opportunity to build on his previous achievements. [1]

The festival is capitalizing on rising international demand for Japanese screen content. Variety reported that exhibition space for the festival's TIFFCOM market sold out early. Managing director Ikeda Kaori stated that Japanese producers are increasingly using the Tokyo market to secure partners during project development. Hollywood Reporter Business also cited Ikeda as stating that global interest in Japanese culture creates opportunities to adapt intellectual property beyond anime and manga. [1][3][5]

Attendance at the market has grown substantially in recent years. Variety reported that the previous edition of TIFFCOM attracted more than 4,600 industry professionals from 46 countries and regions, reflecting a 13 percent increase in attendance. [3]

The Tokyo International Film Festival was established in 1985 and was held biennially before shifting to an annual schedule after 1991. According to Wikipedia, it is accredited by the FIAPF and stands as the second largest film festival in Asia behind the Shanghai International Film Festival. Türkiye Today reported that the current edition of the festival opened under heavy autumn rain. [9][11]
